Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of gastroschisis
Micaela Rădulescu, Emil Coriolan Ulmeanu, Mihaela Nedelea and Alexandra Comşa
ABSTRACT
Gastroschisis is a relatively common congenital defect of the anterior abdominal wall, usually rightsided, through which the intestine and occasionally other abdominal viscera protrude and are exposed to the amniotic fluid. The condition is usually isolated. The isolated defect has an excellent prognosis and low morbidity and mortality rate. The perinatal mortality and morbidity depends on associated bowel anomalies and bowel complications acquired during exposure of the herniated viscera to the amniotic fluid. The prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of the defect, of the eventually associated anomalies and the sonographic monitoring of the fetal growth and detecting of the complications are possible.
